Crop Wild Relative vs. Landrace vs. Elite variety
Plant breeders and other scientists working with crop diversity use a number of different terms to describe the plants they use. Here’s what some of them mean.
Plant breeders have in the past mainly relied on elite varieties and landraces as parents in their breeding programs. But they now need new diversity to work with if they are to develop crops that are able to meet the demands of tomorrow’s consumers in the face of climate change. And this means tapping the diversity present in crop wild relatives too. But working with crop wild relatives comes with many challenges.
This is where pre-breeding comes in.
